PRLog (Press Release)– Mar 29, 2011– While domestic demand improved in 2010, the recovery is proceeding at a slow pace relative to previous post-recession scenarios. The poor market conditions make it increasingly difficult to justify the continued operation of some petrochemicals capacity, despite improvements in the ethane feedstock outlook.

In the first 11 months of 2010, production of major plastic resins totalled 69.2bn lbs, up 3.6% y-o-y. Sales and captive use of major plastic resins totalled 68.7bn lbs, an increase of 3.3% y-o-y. There were significant variations between polymer segments with PVC and LLDPE reporting strong growth while HDPE and PP markets contracted. Even in segments where sales declined, the weakness of the US dollar prompted an increase in production in the first few months of the year, although the recovery in the exchange rate later in the year reversed the tre chrysler egory/audi">audi nd. Polymer resins output growth of around 3.4% in 2010 was below BMI's projection of 5.0% with Q410 figures far lower than we had expected. US olefins producers using ethane as feedstock are likely to extend their competitive edge over producers in other developed states over the medium- to long-term. Overall, we see gas production holding its own to 2015, helped by the exploitation of shale gas deposits. The assurance of a long-term source of supply for feedstocks was factored into some companies' decisions to make major investment, including Eastman Chemical's decision to restart the previously idled ethane cracking unit at its Longview, Texas complex ahead of schedule. The restart increases Eastman's olefin capacity by 225,000tpa and brings the total number of active cracking units at Longview to three. Eastman stated that the restart was prompted by an improvement in market conditions for olefin feedstocks which it expected to continue over the next several years. Eastman has four ethylene units at its Longview complex, with ethylene capacity totalling about 840,000tpa. Meanwhile, Bayer is seeking an investor to use its land in West Virginia as a site for a new ethane cracker to take advantage of ethane produced from shale-gas in the Marcellus shale deposits.

The industry had already seen excess capacity removed from the market ahead of the economic crisis, helping to tighten the polymer market and prevent prices from falling to lower levels. However, despite the availability of cheap ethane feedstock for existing cracker capacity, the prospects for further shutdowns are certain as the US struggles to compete with suppliers in the Middle East and Asia and domestic demand growth remains sluggish. Companies dependent on purchasing feedstock on the market, such as US-based Dow Chemical or LyondellBasell, are more vulnerable. BMI believes that producers are continuing to operate some uncompetitive capacity in the hope that competitors will close their plants. The US petrochemicals industry is likely to see a decline in capacity - particularly in commodity products - over the medium-term, but the focus will be on improving added value through technological innovation. BMI expects increased investment in R&D and technology-driven joint ventures (JVs), mergers alfa romeo and acquisitions. A major area for innovation is light-weighting packaging and plastics, which are an alternative to metal in certain products and applications, particularly in the transportation industry.

INVESTING in the long-term potential of alternative energy sources such as solar and geothermal power is rapidly gaining popularity if capital raisings are any guide. With governments taking steps to curb corporate activity deemed environmentally unsustainable, investors su acura ch as Simon Wright are also betting on the emergence of new markets with more immediate returns.

Wright, who is a Markets Management executive of Hong Kong-based Birchall McCallen Fund Management, hunts for firms that are vulnerable because managers have ignored environmental risks or have failed to prepare for stiffer regulations, particularly those related to climate change.

US home-builder Technical Olympic USA is currently Wright's favourite stock to "short", a market activity that contributes to and profits from a sliding share price. So far, that gamble is paying off. Crumbling US demand for new housing and worries about the company's construction in areas Wright says are "either drought-prone or flood-prone" have sent shares down almost 80 per cent over the past year.

"You've got to have a clear shot that they've got a real problem in their business, and the climate risk adds to the unattractiveness," Wright said. "No one in their right mind wants to buy an asset in areas that won't be habitable in 10 years." Wright, 47, concedes that "the short side of the climate story is not really upon us", with private equity firms posing among the biggest threats for investors punting on a company's shares tumbling because of e bmw nvironmental risks.

"I view parts of the aviation industry to have extreme risk," he said. "But with the QcrBanks (Quarie Bank) and private equity guys running around, it hasn't been a profitable area to even think about being short." Hong Kong International Airport, fo chevrolet r instance, appeared to be "a great short", he said. The airport relies on long-haul traffic, with Germans among those debating the carbon costs of intercontinental flights. It's barely above sea level, and management doesn't see they have a risk, he says. Still, the stock is up 13 per cent this year in part because of expectations that traffic will expand.

A firm's energy intensity gives investors one guide to future vulnerability, Wright says. Refiners, cement-makers and shipping companies are among those likely to face hefty bills to refit operations to cut energy use and related emissions. The timing of such changes will hinge on which governments move first.

In coming months, Birchall McCallen will begin tapping investors in Europe for a new fund that will have a €1 billion ($USD1.46 billion) capacity.

The Carbon Management fund will later be sold in the United States and is likely to be offered to Asian investors by the end of July.

The fund's focus will be mostly on longer-term investments, with about 40 per cent to be earmarked for uranium production, particularly from mothballed mines in the US. A similar amount will target upgrades for electricity grids, and the remainder car news pollution control, he said.

"The most out-sized gains I see are in the near-term production of uranium," he said. "I can see opportunities there that could be 10 to 40-times our investment."

March 21, 2011—The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL), http://www.ciel.org, a leading non-profit that uses international law to defend the right to a healthy planet, today announced the release of a new report, "Fossilized Thinking: The World Bank, Eskom and the Real Costs of Coal-Based Power Projects."

The report ex auto part amines the economics underlying the Bank's $3 billion loan to support a massive new coal-fired plant in South Africa. Specifically, the report evaluates whether the Bank adequately considered the impacts the 4,800 MW Eskom Project will have on human health and the environment and the likely economic costs of these impacts. The Bank's operational policies require that these "externalities‟ be taken into account to determine whether a project's long-term economic benefits outweigh its costs.

CIEL's analysis reveals that, at least in this case, the Bank failed to adequately address and quantify important negative environmental effects, such as water scarcity and quality, air quality, and transboundary impacts. Nor did the Bank fully address the public health impacts associated with the environmental consequences of coal-based power.

"This project highlights a broader problem in World Bank funding," explained Steve Porter, Climate Program Director at CIEL. "Because all of the costs have not been accounted for, coal projects like Eskom have been unfairly favored, which means that there has never been a real consideration of alternatives, such as wind, solar and other alternative energy sources."

As a result, domestic polysilicon (raw material) production industry suffered overstocked products and a situation of "serious excess production capacity" and has not been pulled out of the slump so far.

In addition, most of China's polysilicon production technology adopts Siemens improvement method and there are basically has no intellectual property rights. China's polysilicon projects are mostly started when the polysilicon price was high and the industry developed at top speed. International Container Terminal Services Inc (ICTSI) and South Harbour Asian Terminals Inc (ATI), two of the largest terminal operators in the country, have announced they are to implement a number of projects this year to help resolve port congestion. ATI said it would build an offsite container yard near its Manila South Harbour concession. It will be built six km from the South Harbour and will likely double the current yard's capacity to 120 containers per month. ATI said it was also extending Pier 3 by 120m, expanding Pier 9 and demolishing two Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) buildings to make way for a bigger container yard. ICTSI has expressed its commitment to expand its Berth 6 by 320m and Berth 7 by 300m, as well as increasing the size of its container yard, in the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT). It is also looking at creating a truck-holding area outside the port zone.

In his hotel room the morning after, Muhammad Ali nursed a swollen jaw as the room service waiter arrived with breakfast and good wishes for the man he called champ.

"I'm not the champ," Ali corrected him. "Joe Frazier is the champ."

Indeed he was, and if anyone needed a reminder the morning papers provided it with a picture as shocking to Ali's adoring fans as his defeat the night before. There was Ali glassy-eyed and struggling to get up from the canvas in the 15th round as Frazier walked to a neutral corner more certain than ever of victory.

"There were a couple of knockdowns really," Frazier said, chuckling at the thought. "They called the first one a slip. But it was the left hook that made him slip."

It was 40 years ago Tuesday that Ali and Frazier met at Madison Square Garden in a fight so big it was simply referred to as The Fight. It was Frazier's heavyweight title that was on the line, but a lot of boxing fans still considered Ali the champion because he was stripped of the title and sent into boxing exile for refusing to be drafted.

Frazier was undefeated and in his prime, a relentless aggressor with a vicious left hook. Ali, in just his third fight since the 3½-year layoff, was a polarizing figure who was hated by some just as much as he was loved by others.

"A lot of 'em want me whipped because of the draft," Ali said before the fight. "A lot of 'em want me whipped because of religion. A lot of 'em want me whipped because I'm black ... and for other reasons that I might not even know about."

They would go on to meet two more times, including the memorable Thrilla in Manilla. But nothing could match the stakes that March night at the Garden, where Frank Sinatra shot pictures at ringside, celebrities jockeyed for prime seats, and almost as many men as women wore full-length fur coats.

Prime seats were $150 — an astonishing sum at the time — and they could have sold them for twice that price. Tickets were so scarce that Frank Costello, reputed boss of the Luciano crime family and a fight regular, could only get two seats instead of his usual four.

There seemed no way the fight could live up to the hype. But Ali and Frazier made sure it did.

Frazier was on the attack the whole night, stalking Ali and hitting him with left hooks anytime he got close. Ali clowned at times, but his jab kept finding the mark and he landed some right hands to the head that would have dropped other fighters.

Frazier, though, was not going to be denied. He hurt Ali badly in the 11th round — the same round Ali slipped on a wet spot and went to the canvas — and landed a crushing left hook 25 seconds into the 15th round that put Ali down for real. Ali got up and finished the fight, but his jaw was swollen like a grapefruit and, when the scorecards were announced, Frazier had won a unanimous decision.

"Ali lost but it was still one of his greatest moments," said retired Associated Press boxing writer Ed Schuyler Jr., who was ringside. "He had fought only twice after coming back from more than three years off and he went 15 rounds with a guy at the top of his game."

That Ali wasn't quite the fighter he was before his layoff may not have made a difference. Ali still had the skills to beat almost every other fighter, but he couldn't overcome Frazier's sheer determination.

"If Joe Frazier would have fought King Kong he would have knocked him out that night," said Gene Kilroy, who was a friend of both men and later became Ali's business manager. "Nothing was going to stop Joe Frazier."

Ali is 69 now, living in Arizona and suffering from the debilitating effects of Parkinson's syndrome, a movement disorder causing tremors of the hands, arms and legs and stiffness. Frazier, who slurs his words at times, is 67 and lives in Philadelphia, where, on a recent day, he answered the phone after doing 25 minutes on an exercise bicycle.

Frazier said he planned to go to parties in New York and Philadelphia to celebrate the night that still defines his life today.

"I can't go nowhere where it's not mentioned," Frazier said. "That was the greatest thing that ever happened in my life."

Not that all his moments with The Greatest were all that great. Frazier was bitter over things Ali said about him while promoting their fights, and he carried a grudge for many years.

But he says he's moved on.

"I forgive him," Frazier said. "He's in a bad way."

Asked what they would talk about if they met, Frazier just laughed. They would, of course, talk about the same thing everyone wants to talk to Joe Frazier about.

The greatest night of his life.

And a fight so great it remains The Fight.

Choosing a hybrid or a diesel vehicle can often result in big fuel savings, but there's a catch: Most of these vehicles are more expensive than their gasoline-model equivalents and the price premium can take many years to earn back at the pump. Tax credits used to help defray the extra cost, but these credits expired at the start of 2011.

As such, it can be helpful to consider a green car's break-even period when evaluating choices. The break-even period is the amount of time it takes for the vehicle's fuel savings to offset its price premium.

These 10 hybrids and diesels offer the shortest break-even periods when compared with their gasoline-model equivalents. Our data assumes a national gasoline price of $3.11 per gallon, a national diesel price of $3.42 per gallon and an average of 15,000 miles driven each year. Fuel prices are obviously quite fluid and as they change, so, too, will each vehicle's break-even period. All other things being equal, steeper gas prices will lead to shorter break-even periods while cheaper gas will have the opposite effect.

In addition to its break-even period, we've listed the gasoline model with which each hybrid or diesel was compared. Note that in cases where the diesel or hybrid has no direct gasoline-model equivalent, we've compared it to its closest sibling. We've also included each diesel or hybrid's price premium; bear in mind that the Mercedes Benz GL-Class Diesel has a negative price premium (and a negative break-in period) because it costs less than gasoline models. Finally, our list also includes the yearly fuel savings earned by hybrids and diesels relative to their gasoline-model counterparts.

"He's feeling somewhat the same. I would say there's no real progress there," Armstrong said.

Forward Vladimir Sobotka will be out a month with a broken left foot from blocking a shot Sunday in Calgary and Armstrong said rookie forward Philip McRae will be placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a lower body injury.

Hybrids and the current crop of clean diesels offer impressive fuel savings over their gas counterparts. But hybrid and diesel technologies aren't cheap and often add thousands of dollars to a car's sticker price. As recently as 2010, the federal government offered tax credits that helped soften the financial impact. That spurred sales and encouraged consumers to adopt this new technology.

But these tax credits stopped on January 1, 2011. With their expiration comes a good question for consumers: Are hybrids and diesels a good value?

A few years ago, Edmunds editors came to the conclusion that hybrids didn't make financial sense. Even with the federal tax credits available at the time, it would have taken a number of years before anyone would start to see significant savings from a hybrid over a comparable non-hybrid vehicle. Now that the credits are gone, the pure financial case for hybrids and diesels has weakened further.

Break-Even TimesMost people don't keep their cars long enough to realize savings from them. If you're like the average person, you hold onto a new car for five to six years. After that, you're looking toward purchasing a new one. Unless you keep the hybrid or diesel past its "break-even" period — the amount of time it would take you to save enough money on gas to offset the additional expense of buying the hybrid — it's not the wise choice.

Here are the break-even times of a few popular hybrids and diesels compared with their gasoline-model equivalents. This data assumes the driver averages 15,000 miles per year and that the national gasoline price is $3.11 per gallon and $3.42 for a gallon of diesel:

The Toyota Prius is hard to gauge because it doesn't have a gasoline equivalent. But when compared to the Toyota Corolla, the Prius would take 6.3 years to break even. Compared to the Toyota Camry, however, it takes less than a year (0.7).

These break-even times are so long because hybrids and diesels are still pricey cars. Although hybrids have been around for more than 10 years, the technology hasn't been streamlined in a way that can bring costs down. Every automaker seems to have its own take on the technology. Plus, nearly every hybrid uses rare earth metals like lithium, lanthanum and neodymium, whose prices have increased as more products (i.e. laptops and cell phones) use these batteries.

Lastly, the hybrid and/or diesel version of a vehicle is often positioned as the brand's high-tech model and as such, it's loaded with more options than would normally be found in the gasoline equivalent. Buyers aren't just paying more for the technology, but also for added navigation, all-wheel drive or leather seats.

The Case for Hybrids and DieselsIt's easy to get fooled by the advertising and think that as soon as you purchase a hybrid or diesel vehicle you will start saving money. That's not true, but there are still reasons why people choose these cars:

Reduced greenhouse gas emissions: People buy hybrids because they want a vehicle that uses less gasoline and thus reduces their carbon footprint. For them, the choice of car isn't based on saving money, but on reducing their impact on the environment. Fewer trips to the gas station: Not having to fill up your car with gas on a weekly basis is such a powerful feeling that many people buy hybrids or diesels just to delay those inevitable trips to the gas station. The prospect of steeper gas prices: The break-even numbers in this article can change. They are snapshots of current gas prices and assume that a person drives 15,000 miles per year. If gas prices go up — and a number of signs say they will — the break-even times fall dramatically. That's also the case for owners who drive more than the 15,000-mile average in these examples.

Hybrid and Diesel AlternativesIf you are put off by the break-even times on new hybrids and diesels but want to save money on fuel, there are a number of alternate routes to take:

Keep your car: In most cases, you'll save money by simply hanging on to your current vehicle. The cost of buying a new car has to be offset before it can start saving you money on gas. Use our gas-guzzler calculator to determine whether the jump to a new car would make sense. Consider a new fuel-efficient conventional car: The Chevrolet Sonic, Ford Fiesta and Hyundai Elantra are a few examples of the new breed of compact cars that can get hybridlike fuel economy. Each of these achieves up to 40 mpg on the highway. Shop for a used fuel-sipper: If a new fuel-efficient car is beyond your budget, consider buying a used car that gets good mileage. A 2005 honda Civic, for example, averages about 30 mpg in mixed driving. A quick search of used car listings shows that a 5- or 6-year-old Civic can be had for roughly $10,000 less than a new Civic Hybrid whose mpg is about 41 mpg.

Seeing Through Hybrid and Diesel HypeHybrids and, to a lesser extent, diesels, get a lot of media attention. But the fact is that they only constitute 2.4 percent of all cars sold. Price is likely one reason for those meager sales figures. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint or take advantage of some of the non-economic benefits of hybrids and diesels, you might be willing to pay more to do so. But if your primary interest in a hybrid or diesel is saving money on fuel, it makes sense to check out other options.
