PRLog (Press Release)– Jun 23, 2011– Forum for the Future today announced an ambitious strategy to future-proof key sectors of the economy, so they can prosper and benefit society while respecting environmental limits.

The non-profit organisation will bring together leading global businesses, central and local government, ambitious entrepreneurs and NGOs to work on collaborative projects aimed at finding ways to catalyse widespread change in three key sectors: food, energy and finance.

Peter Madden, CEO of Forum for the Future, said: "We are facing unprecedented challenges, from climate change and social inequality to loss of biodiversity and shortages of vital resources like food and water.

"These global problems affect everyone and even acura the biggest corporations can't tackle them alone. We need to transform our economies urgently and stop acting as if the Earth has endless resources. Forum for the Future aims to do this by bringing together key organisations to overcome barriers to change and collaborate on action where it can make the biggest difference."

Forum for the Future will focus on "systems innovation", initially in food, energy and finance, three sectors which underpin our lives and are critical to creating a sustainable world. It will study the dynamics of these sectors, identify the points where interventions can have the greatest effect, and work with key organisations to build plans of action. < audi /p>

Forum's Sustainable Shipping Initiative is pioneering this new approach. It unites leaders from across the global maritime sector, including Maersk Line, Rio Tinto and Cargill, and embraces ship owners, charterers, shipbuilders, engineers, service providers and financiers. Last month members published a Case for Action, setting out the reasons why the sector needs to become sustainable and they plan to develop a roadmap with actions to achieve this.

Forum will also help companies that are leading the way in sustainability to go further. It will help them develop new business models that achieve commercial success by delivering value to customers and society, all within environmental limits.

Forum for the Future's new strategy builds on 15 years of work on sustainability with leading businesses - from Aviva to Vodafone - and with central and local government.

•   Forum has helped organisations develop their strategy, highlighting the opportunities sustainability presents. It has worked with them to develop ambitious campaigns and commitments including Marks & Spencer's Plan A and Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan.

•   Forum has sparked the innovation of new products, services and business models. It worked with O2 to launch Eco rating, the UK's first scheme rating mobile phones on their sustainability. It helped ICI Paints AkzoNobel develop Ecosure, an award-winning paint.

•   Forum has trained thousands of leaders across society through master classes and its own ground-breaking Masters in Leadership for Sustainable Development, so they understand sustainable development and are equipped to face our global challenges.

Forum for the Future unveiled details of its new strategy and celebrated 15 years of bringing sustainability into mainstream business practice at an event on June 22 with an invited audience of its partners in business and the public sector.
